Sociolinguistics

1. Based on Ronald Wardhaugh’s book, there are four varieties of possible relationship between language and society. They are,
a. Social structure may either influence or determine linguistic structure and/or behavior.
b. Linguistic structure and/or behavior may either influence or determine social structure
c. Language and society may influence each other (bi-directional)
d. There is no relationship at all between linguistic structure and social structure and that each is independent of the other.

2. A word ‘Rambut’ in Madura is commonly different from the standard in Indonesia language or another place.

3. Comparison the word ‘Rambut’
Wikipedia & KBBI: the word ‘Rambut’ can be used for everyone.
E.g. - bapak ingin mencukur rambutnya
- adikku mempunyai rambut panjang
In this expression, the word ‘Rambut’ is commonly used for every body. The use of ‘Rambut’ is used for everybody.

Madura: the word ‘Rambut’ is only used for the older person not for the younger person
E.g. - eppa’ terro nyokorrah rambut deh (rambut = rambut)
- tang ale’ andhi’ obu’ begus. (obu’ = rambut)
In this expression, the word ‘Rambut’ is commonly used for the person who is older than us or someone that we respect. At the same time as obu’ is commonly used for person who is younger than us.

4. The definition of Sociolinguistics from four authors
a. Gumperz, 1971. Sociolinguistics is an attempt to find correlations between social structure and linguistic structure and to observe any changes that occur.
b. Hudson, 1980. Sociolinguistics is the study of language in relation to society and it will study society in order to find out as much as we can about what kind of thing language is.
c. Prof. Dr. H. Mudjia Rahardjo, M.Si, 2010. Sociolinguistics (often called a functional linguistics, and a cross disciplinary study) of which terms was first coined in 1950’s to try to bring together the perspectives of linguists and sociologists to bear on issues concerning the place of language in society, and to address the social contexts of linguistic diversity.
d. Spolsky, 1998. Sociolinguistics is the field that studies the relationship between language and society, between the uses of language and the social structures in which the users of language live. It is the field of study that assumes that human society is made up of many related patters and behaviours, some of which are linguistics.
